Getting a PPS Number

How long does it take to get a PPS number?

After you attend your DSP appointment and your application is approved, DSP posts your PPS number to your Irish address within 7–10 working days. If you have an urgent need (e.g. a job starts in 2 days), call the DSP helpline after a few days — they can provide the number over the phone once it is processed.

Can I apply for a PPS number online?

No. The PPS number application must be made in person at a DSP Intreo Centre. There is no online application process for adults. You must bring original documents — DSP does not accept scans, photos, or photocopies. Children born in Ireland are automatically assigned a PPS number at birth registration.

Do I need a job offer to get a PPS number?

A job offer letter is one of the accepted reasons for needing a PPS number, but it is not the only one. You can also apply if you are: registering for social welfare, renting accommodation and dealing with the RTB, enrolling a child in school, applying for a driving licence, or have received correspondence from Revenue or a government body requiring a PPS number.

Can a child get a PPS number?

Yes. Children born in Ireland are automatically assigned a PPS number as part of civil birth registration. Children born abroad who are moving to Ireland must apply at a DSP Intreo Centre in the same way as adults. A parent or guardian must attend the appointment with the child.

Documents & Requirements

What is proof of address for a PPS number application?

DSP accepts: utility bills (electricity, gas, broadband) dated within 3 months; bank statements dated within 3 months; official government letters addressed to you at your Irish address; GP registration letter; or a letter from a landlord or host confirming you reside at the address. Airbnb confirmation emails are generally not accepted.

Can I use a hotel address for a PPS number application?

No. DSP requires a stable residential address in Ireland — a hotel or hostel address is generally not accepted. If you are newly arrived and staying temporarily, try to obtain a letter from a host or friend confirming you are living at their address while you arrange permanent accommodation.

My passport is expired — can I still apply?

No. DSP requires a valid (non-expired) passport or identity document. An expired passport is not accepted as proof of identity. If your passport has expired, you must renew it before applying for a PPS number.

Do I need to show a job offer letter in Irish?

No. The job offer letter does not need to be in Irish or translated. An original letter in English from your employer confirming your employment or the offer of employment is accepted. Letters in other languages may require a certified translation.

Lost & Existing Numbers

I worked in Ireland before — do I already have a PPS number?

Yes. If you have ever worked in Ireland, claimed a social welfare payment, or had any dealings with Revenue or DSP, you almost certainly already have a PPS number. Check your old payslips, P60s, or Revenue letters. DSP will not issue you a second PPS number — it is permanent.

How do I find my PPS number without documents?

Log in to Revenue's myAccount at revenue.ie — your PPS number is visible in your profile. Alternatively, call the DSP helpline (1890 927 999) or Revenue (01 738 3636) and they can confirm it after identity verification. Also check MyGovID / mywelfare.ie if you have an account there.

Does my PPS number change if I change my name?

No. Your PPS number stays the same for life regardless of name changes, address changes, marital status, or citizenship. You should update your name with Revenue and DSP so their records match, but the PPS number itself does not change.

What if my PPS number was issued before 2013 — is it still valid?

Yes. PPS numbers issued before the 2013 format change (when a second letter was added) remain valid and in use. If your PPS number ends in a single letter (e.g. 1234567A), it is still fully valid for all purposes in 2026.

PPS Number & Work

Can I start work in Ireland without a PPS number?

Technically yes, but it is not advisable. Without a PPS number, your employer must apply emergency tax — which means you are taxed at 20% for the first four weeks and then at 40% with no tax credits. You can reclaim overpaid emergency tax once your PPS number is active, but it causes short-term financial difficulty.

Can my employer find my PPS number for me?

No. Your employer cannot look up your PPS number — it is personal data. Only you (or DSP and Revenue) have access to it. If you have worked in Ireland before, check your own documents or contact DSP/Revenue yourself.

My employer asked for my PPS number for a reason unrelated to payroll — should I give it?

Be cautious. Your PPS number is personal data protected under GDPR. Employers are legally entitled to use it for PAYE registration and payroll purposes only. If your employer is asking for it for a different reason, ask them to explain the legal basis under GDPR. You are not obliged to hand it over without a valid reason.

Do self-employed people need a PPS number?

Yes. Self-employed individuals in Ireland must have a PPS number to register with Revenue, file Form 11 income tax returns, register for VAT, and deal with any social welfare or DSP matters. If you are starting self-employment, your PPS number is also your tax reference number.

Other Questions

Can my landlord ask for my PPS number?

Your landlord has no legal right to demand your PPS number. They may request it for certain landlord registration purposes (e.g. HAP scheme), but you should verify the specific reason before providing it. Under GDPR, landlords must have a lawful basis for collecting and processing personal data including PPS numbers.

Is a PPS number the same as a PPSN?

Yes. PPSN stands for Personal Public Service Number — it is the same thing as a PPS number. You will see both abbreviations used interchangeably in official documents. "PPS number" and "PPSN" refer to the same unique identifier.

What is the Public Services Card and is it the same as a PPS number?

No. The Public Services Card (PSC) is a physical card that verifies your identity for accessing public services — it is separate from your PPS number. The PSC is issued after identity verification at a DSP office and stores biometric data. Your PPS number is printed on some Revenue correspondence but not on the PSC itself.
