PPS application — specific limitations

The following aspects of the PPS number application process are particularly subject to individual variation that the general guides on this site cannot fully capture:

• Acceptable documents — the DSP maintains a list of acceptable identity and proof-of-address documents. This list can vary based on your country of origin and nationality. The documents we describe on this site reflect the DSP's published guidance at the time of the most recent review, but the DSP has discretion in some cases, and specific offices may have additional requirements or accept alternatives not listed in the standard guidance.
• Immigration status — the PPS number application process for non-EU nationals requires proof of your right to be in Ireland (a visa, a residence permit, or another qualifying document). What constitutes acceptable proof depends on your specific visa type and immigration status. This site provides a general overview; if your status is complex, verify with the DSP before attending.
• Existing PPS numbers — if you have previously lived in Ireland, you may already have a PPS number and should not apply for a new one. The process for recovering an existing PPS number is different from a first application. The guides on this site explain this distinction, but verifying whether you have a PPS number requires contacting the DSP directly.
• Children's applications — applying for a PPS number for a child requires different documentation and follows a separate process. General guidance for adult applications does not apply without modification to child applications.
