Applying for a PPS number requires a visit to a DSP Intreo Centre with specific documents. Here is exactly what you need and what to expect.
Before applying, check your old payslips, P60s, Revenue correspondence, or MyWelfare account. If you previously worked in Ireland or claimed any benefit, you likely already have one. Applying for a second PPS number is not permitted.
See the documents list below. Missing even one document will result in your application being rejected on the day — you will have to rebook and return.
Book online at mywelfare.ie or call your nearest Intreo Centre. Check the DSP website for current waiting times — in Dublin, waiting times can be several weeks during busy periods. If you are unsure which documents you need, D'Emilia Accounting can review your situation beforehand — send us a message on WhatsApp.
Bring originals of all documents — photocopies are not accepted. A DSP officer will verify your identity, review your documents, and process your application on the spot.
DSP sends a letter with your PPS number to your Irish address within 7–10 working days. If it is urgent (e.g. you have a job start date), call the DSP helpline after a few days — they can provide the number over the phone once the application is processed.
| Document type | What is accepted |

WhatsApp D'Emilia Accounting →You must apply in person at a DSP (Department of Social Protection) Intreo Centre. You cannot apply online or by post. You need to bring: photo ID (passport or national ID card), proof of address in Ireland (utility bill, bank statement, or letter from a government body), and evidence of your reason for needing a PPS number (e.g. a job offer letter, a lease, or a letter from Revenue).
Yes. Since 2020, DSP Intreo Centres operate mostly by appointment. You can book online at mywelfare.ie or by calling your local Intreo Centre. Some offices accept walk-ins for urgent cases, but this is not guaranteed — booking in advance avoids delays.
Once your application is verified, DSP sends your PPS number by post to your Irish address within 7–10 working days. You can also call the DSP helpline to receive the number by phone if it is urgent. You cannot receive it in person at the counter on the day of your appointment.
Required documents: (1) Photo ID — passport or EU national ID card for EU/EEA citizens; passport and IRP card for non-EU nationals. (2) Proof of Irish address — a utility bill, bank statement, or government letter dated within 3 months. (3) Evidence of the reason you need the number — e.g. a job offer letter, Revenue correspondence, or confirmation of a benefit claim.
No. You must have an address in Ireland at the time of application — DSP sends the number by post to your Irish address. You should apply after arriving in Ireland and securing accommodation, even temporary accommodation. A letter from a host or family member confirming you are staying at an address may be accepted as proof in some cases.
A PPS number is completely free. The Department of Social Protection does not charge any fee to issue a PPS number. If anyone charges you a fee to "arrange" a PPS number on your behalf, this is likely a scam — report it to DSP.
