FAQ

What does PPS number stand for?

PPS stands for Personal Public Service. A PPS number is a unique identifier that the Irish state uses to track your interactions with public services — including the Department of Social Protection (DSP), Revenue (tax), the Department of Education, and the HSE.

Is a PPS number the same as a tax number?

Your PPS number is also your tax identification number in Ireland. Revenue uses it to link your income, tax credits, and tax records. So yes — when employers or Revenue ask for your "tax number," they mean your PPS number.

When do I need a PPS number?

You need a PPS number to: start working in Ireland (for PAYE registration), apply for social welfare benefits, file an income tax return, access HSE healthcare records, apply for a driving licence, register a child at school, and deal with many other public services.

What does a PPS number look like?

A PPS number consists of 7 digits followed by 1 or 2 letters (e.g. 1234567A or 1234567FA). The letters are check characters. Your PPS number does not contain your name, date of birth, or other personal details — it is a random identifier.

Can I have more than one PPS number?

No. Each person is assigned one PPS number for life. It does not change if you change your name, address, or immigration status. If you are unsure whether you already have a PPS number, check old payslips, tax documents, or contact DSP before applying for a new one.

Does a PPS number expire?

No. Your PPS number is valid for your lifetime and is never re-assigned to another person. However, if you leave Ireland for an extended period, Revenue may archive your tax record. You can reactivate it when you return.
